When it comes to teaching all about matter, there are so many fun teaching ideas and lessons to do in the primary classroom! Below are some of my absolute favorites with anchor chart ideas, activities, and more!
- Define Matter- Help your students understand exactly what is matter and the properties of matter with this easy-to-make What is Matter anchor chart. Help students understand that matter is anything that takes up space and can sorted by size, shape, texture, color, and mass.
2. Sort Matter According to Its Properties – To help reinforce how matter can be sorted by its properties, place different objects in various stations/centers for students to sort in a rotation.
3. Play Guess the Object in the Mystery Bag Game– This game is simple. Place random classroom objects into a bag. Encourage a student to draw an object without taking it out of the bag and then describe its physical characteristics to the class. If students can guess what it is, they get a point! Students love using their knowledge to correctly guess the object and win together!
4. Define and Give Examples of Three States of Matter– Discuss and define the three states of matter and encourage students to give examples of each.
5. Demonstrate How Matter Can Change– Students love sharing how matter can change then experiencing and witnessing it for themselves in the classroom. Some ways to do this safely are to melt ice cubes using body heat, melt crayons with a hair dryer, create a batter mix then use heat to make waffles, and add heat to make popcorn. Students can also freeze juice to make popsicles or heat up water to see steam.
