One of my most favorite lessons to teach is teaching empathy using Children’s books, especially Eve Bunting’s books. For students to truly understand and relate to the stories and text that they are reading, I feel that it is essential that students are able to make authentic and meaningful connections with the text and learn to empathize with the characters in the story.
Therefore, I have found that Eve Bunting’s books are the perfect mentor texts to teach making connections and empathy to young readers. While some of the stories do not have happy endings as traditional Children books do, it is essential that young learners understand that this too is part of real life, realistic fiction, and loosely based biographies.
