I miss this space.

I miss the memories that could have been made here last spring.

I miss the lessons that could have been taught.

But most importantly, I miss the little humans I shared this space with.

While spent all of spring missing my students, I knew we were all quarantined and felt so blessed that they were all safe.

I got to see many of them online daily. For others, I loved seeing their work, videos, and photos even if it was once in awhile. Every time I received an assignment turned in from them, I would smile and instantly felt like my day was made.

While I missed them so much, I knew that at least they were at home and we all were doing our best to minimize the chances of contracting COVID.

As much as I want to be back in my classroom and be with my new students in August, there is still so much uncertainty. The rates of people contracting COVID continues to rise and hospitals are stretched to their limits.

Being a teacher and a mom during this time also brings on another set of anxiety.

So many questions, many of those posted by sweet friend, @jillianstarrteaching . There is no perfect solution, but if those who are making decisions for our students’ and teachers’ livelihoods are meeting online, why are they the ones planning for us to teach in-person?

When we moved into our forever home, I scheduled a $When we moved into our forever home, I scheduled an appointment with a well known company to come to our house to quote us on some shades and curtains. Usually, my husband gets the door but because he was at work, I met up with her instead. Immediately, when I greeted her, her demeanor changed. She looked surprised and even shocked that it was me and two babies at the door. Whether she thought I looked too young or not the right color to own such a new house in a nice neighborhood, I could feel it. She shot down all of my ideas and choices and plainly said they wouldn’t look right and they were silly. She was completely hostile and I could feel the resentment in her voice and eyes. She scaled our house up and down as she kept insisting to have my husband come home from work and talk to him instead. So I decided that I only had one thing to do, I showed her the door and said she doesn’t ever need to come back. I know deep down inside that she felt that I was somehow unworthy of what I had and possibly had more than she did, which she displayed it through her unapproval of my choices and ideas for curtains and blinds for my own house. Racism doesn’t see your hard work, the hours you spent staying up at night to do your homework and study for your exams alone without any help, the scholarships you applied for because you knew that you won’t get any inheritance or trust fund that could help you in college or afterwards, the 18 to 21 credits that you took each semester to graduate magna cum laude, the pressure and stress that you put yourself through because you have no other choice, and the years of working against all odds to build and create something for yourself and family. It only sees your color and deems you unworthy and wants to put you in ‘your’ place. Unfortunately for her, I don’t play and I don’t pay to feed into racism. This is only one example that I have faced racism in my life. At times it’s hostile, at times it’s subtle. And the truth is, what I face is only a fraction of what others face every day. Because so, I can’t just post a black square and claim I’m an ally. There is lots of work to be done, and we are only getting started.$
